Tips for Styling the Perfect Coffee Table

Tips for Styling the Perfect Coffee Table

One of the questions I get asked the most as a designer is how to style a coffee table. (That and how to style a bookshelf-you can read more about that here.) So today I am sharing some tips that I use myself and have found helpful.

You want a coffee table centerpiece that is both appealing to look at and adds interest while still being functional. Coffee tables are quick to collect clutter if you are not careful. Which brings me to my first tip:

1) Add storage and organization with trays and bowls. Trays are great for creating a specified area for your centerpiece and bowls are great for collecting little nick knacks that may appear. Choose a pretty decorative tray/bowl to add dimension or a classy metal one for a more modern effect. They should add to the centerpiece and desired effect.

2) Keep it interesting with various heights and sizes. Try to pick items that are both tall and low. This contrast in dimensions adds depth and character. (But don’t go too high or you will obstruct views.) You can accomplish this by using a vase or stacking books at different levels. Pick smaller items like paper weights and larger items like decorative bowls (see tip #1).

3) Keep it balanced. Think about your coffee table and how big it is, you do not want to have your centerpiece be too big or too small in accordance with your table. Pick items that together as a whole leave enough room for drinks or a remote around the edges.

4) Stay within your room’s theme. Pick items that go with the rest of the room. It would look disjointed and awkward to have a bohemian centerpiece in a farmhouse decorated living room. Choose colors that match and styles that blend with what you already have. You may even be able to take existing items from your room and place them on your coffee table instead.

5) Find something uniquely you and add it to your table. This not only keeps the styling interesting but personal as well. You will enjoy looking at it more if it means something to you, whether it is a vintage figurine or hand crafted project, you will appreciate it more and have an instant conversation starter!
